"The Roof", a new bright and warm painting in the Italian Series by S'anna

The Roof
"6 x 6"
Oil on Museum Quality Panel

"The Roof" is the second piece in the Italian Series that focuses on the roofs of Venice. I finished a third roof yesterday and hopefully will have it posted on Monday. I think it is the clean lines and the reflective qualities of the tiles that I love so much. The fact that I love earth colors probably has something to do with it as well. So, as we look forward to a week of rain and storms, I hope the warmth of the terra cotta helps to lighten your day. As always, I look forward to hearing from you.

"Up On The Roof", a colorful new piece in the Italian Series by S'anna

"Up On The Roof"
6" by 8"
Oil on Museum Quality Panel

SOLD
One of the things that was so obvious as we walked all over Venice was the lack of garden space. When you have to sink pilings 16 feet into the mud, land is at a premium. There were so few gardens, so it was necessary to use any available space for plants and finding a spot outside.. We were there at the end of March , so most windows and roofs were just beginning to show their warmer months colors. It was easy to visualize how they would look in the summer. When I got home and started to look over all the photos I had taken on the trip I kept on going back to the photos of the roofs. It was while I worked on this piece that the old song "Up On The Roof " by The Drifters kept popping into my head. My favorite singer of this song is James Taylor. I hope you enjoy this as much as I always have.

"Lighthouse on Murano" is a painting full of color and light from the Italian Series by S'anna

Lighthouse of Murano
6" x 8"
Oil on Museum Quality Panel

SOLD

We had just arrived the day before the photo for this painting was taken.  When we landed in Venice it was overcast and raining. We got to our hotel to find NO reservation, even though I had Confirmation Numbers. The young lady at the desk spent well over 2 hours trying to find another place for us to stay. I really appreciated all her effort. Before we settled in that evening we had moved to 2 additional hotels with the knowledge that we would have to move again the next morning. We got to are final hotel early on Tuesday morning. The sky had cleared and the sun was out and I had decided nothing was going to ruin this trip. I had waited 26 years to return to one of my favorite cities and she was just outside that door. Our plan had been to go to Murano on Tuesday and we were thrilled to find out that the hotel offered free passage to the island by water taxi. The ride across the lagoon was perfect. I was able to get really great shots of the island as we neared the glass factory. The one from yesterdays post was just one of many.

I hope your day is as beautiful as mine was that Tuesday.

Venetian Glass from the Island of Murano

Blowing Glass
2011

On the island of Murano in the Venetian lagoon they make Venetion Glass. Many of the hotels will arrange a free boat ride out, the catch is that you are taken to a pre-arranged glass factory. You are given a free demonstration of how they blow the glass and then guided through the display rooms. It is totally worth it. Many of the pieces in the display rooms are unique works of art. The quality of the work is so much better than what you will find in many of the shops in Venice. Of course it is hoped you will purchase something, but if not, they quickly move on to the next boat load. Even though I have been to the island every time I have visited Venice, I still enjoy watching them blow the glass.

The Photo below was taken as the boat neared the island. I love Lighthouses, and started a painting of this one last night. I'll hopefully publish the finished piece on Wednesday. Hope you will stop back to check it out.

"Rio Bareteri" a vibrant painting of a beautiful canal in Venice by S'anna

6" x 8"
Oil on Museum Quality Panel
Rio Bareteri

This is a beautiful canal near San Marco. It has one bridge on it which you can see in the distance. What attracted me was the red and white pole. Many of the poles I saw in my visit last spring were blue and white. Looking at it now I'm reminded of the light post my father always prepared at Christmas Time. It is one of the main decorations I remember dad doing while we were growing up. He would use this red plastic from the shop and it had this unique rubber smell to it. I haven't found that smell in a long time. Oh well! Dad, your light posts always looked great! I hope you enjoy the painting and I always look forward to your comments.

"Rio de le Toresele", a vibrant painting of a quiet canal in Venice by S"anna

6" x 8"
Oil on Museum Quality Board
Rio de le Torelsele
SOLD

For so many visitors to Venice the Grand Canal is where they spend most of their time. But, in order to really appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of Venice one needs to walk away from the crowd. The area known as Dorsoduro is young, bohemian and artsy. This area, which stretches from the Grand Canal to the canal della Giudecca offers a little bit of everything for visitors. Walking along the small canals full of boats and people is a taste of life at the fullest. I hate to use an old cliche but, "It doesn't get any better."I hope you enjoy the painting and I would love to hear from you.

Rio di San Luca

Rio di San Luca
6" x 6"
Oil on Museum Quality Board

SOLD
This fascinating building is located on Rio di San Luca in Venice.  As I entered the plaza on the other side, walking towards the statue in the center, this building was all I noticed. Its pair of oval windows and matching doors stood out so clearly. I was able to return to this plaza many times in the week I was in venice.

Campo Manin

This was one of those plazas we had to cross to get to the Grande Canal from our hotel. Because of the two bridges there were always lots of people in this plaza. I love the color and the effect many years of exposure to the elements has had on the hues of this building. I wonder how often they have to repaint the outside to keep it looking this way?

Clouds, Natures Center of Emotion

As a science teacher, when we come to clouds I teach how the different types of clouds are natures weather forecasters, (usually better than the guy on the evening news).  In my paintings they take on a whole new realm of significance. They portray all that nature has to share, from the quiet of a beautiful sunset to the destructive winds of force. One of the best artist I've seen approach clouds with this understanding  is Will Hawkins. I hope you enjoy the above short video. The music is also his own recording.

The light was fading quickly and dusk was approaching. Before long the mist would start to settle and the small villa on top of the hill would all but disappear till morning light. The rolling hills, with isolated homes and small villages of a few hundred people continue on as they have forever.

"Italian Ruin" a brightly colored painting of a typical farm building in Italy by S. Frank

Italian Ruin
6" x 8"
Oil on Museum Quality Panel
Sold

Old structures that have not been occupied for many years lay empty on many farms in Italy. Oh, they are used as storage sheds for hay or farming tools, just not people. Now,with the recent increase in interest brought on by the success of "Under The Tuscan Sun" and "A Thousand Days in Tuscany"as well as the traditional pull Italy has on many Americans, the Italian real estate market is flooded with property like the one pictured above ,"For Sale". What is it that pulls so hard on our heart strings? For me it is the pace of life. The slowing down, so one can enjoy and savor the moment. It was this that was the hardest for me to adjust to when I first returned from overseas, the rat-race. Always running, and always further and further behind. Over twenty years later and I am ready to slow down. I am ready to listen to my Heart!

What pulls on your heart strings? What is it saying?

"Country Path (2)" bright, fresh painting of a well traveled path in Italy by S. Frank

Country Path (2)
6" x 8"
Oil on Museum Quality Board

The clean air and bright colors are truly intense in the countryside. The air has a sweetness to it in the spring. It is so similar to that smell we get right after a cleansing rain. And the colors, oh they are so intense. It reminds me of the clear, pure colors we saw in Egypt. I was always amazed that they still looked the way they do after so much time. Yet, they are the colors of the earth.

Wishing all a great Labor Day!

"Country Path (1)" a bright, fresh painting of a well traveled path in Italy by S. Frank

Country Path (1)
6" x 8" Oil on Museum Quality Board
$129.00

An early morning walk on a well traveled path through the Italian country side. The morning mist burned off by the not as yet hot sun. My mind begins to wander, questioning whose feet have trodden upon this dry earth. How many have passed before me? There is a strange comfort in knowing that so many have walked this way. If I stand quietly, will I hear their passing? I love, that no matter where I go in Italy, an ancient history lies patiently to be discovered. I hope you will join me along that path of discovery.

"The Canal" a bright, fresh painting of a side canal in Venice by S. Frank

The Canal

6" x 8"
Oil on Museum Quality Canvas Panel

SOLD

This is the second painting I have finished so far of a canal in Venice. It was interesting to find out that these canals were originally simple water ways between  over one hundred islands that make up todays romantic city of Venice.  The buildings originally used a type of stone below the water level that was resistant to the negative effects of the water and then the buildings were build with bricks above the water level. With the increasing sea level and flooding, the buildings are suffering even more. While there this past spring, work was being done in Saint Marks Square to raise the level. The large squares were being taken up and sand was added with the stones being replaced. They were rushing to complete the square before the official beginning of tourist season(April 1st).
For some fantastic views of Venice, check out the movie "The Tourist" . The shots of the Grand Canal are breath taking.

Caught In The Middle, Help!!

I have been looking at the space I use as a studio (lucky enough to have a space set aside just for my painting) and have decided I have to get it better organized. Storage is a never ending problem. It's not that I don't have spaces for most of my stuff, it's that once I put it away I NEVER CAN FIND IT AGAIN.  The same thing occasionally happens in my classroom at school, then I'm really in trouble. You know, how you invariably need the stuff you cleaned up and now have no idea where you put it.  That's me!

OK, so I tried to get a better grip on why I'm this way. I mean, I teach science (supposedly the more organized side of the brain) and then go straight for my creative side( just got to do it!). There is a tug-o-war going on in there, and I feel like I'm caught in the middle. I have bought books (don't know where half of them are), attended seminars (came home with great enthusiasm) and still face the same problem. Any suggestions or ideas? I am ready for a change!

Enjoy This Day.

"Vacant Lot", an early morning painting of a tree filled lot by Sue Frank

5" x 7"
Oil on Canvas Board

This was at one time a beautiful vacant lot near my home.  It was covered in grass and surrounded by beautiful trees. One of the neighbors kindly kept it mowed for the neighborhood. During the summer, the local soccer teams would use it to practice on. Since it was down the street and around the corner from me, it was just a short walk and many in the area would go and watch the local teams practice. Sitting on a very quiet street, made it a great place to go and let your dog run without worrying about traffic. It was just a great piece of nature within the bounds of the city. As we all know, progress moves on, and this lot is now home to new neighbors, welcome. There is another house scheduled to go up in the near future.  The trees still surround this area, but that little plot of nature is gone, thus the way of Progress.

"Behind Closed Doors" a warm, golden oil painting with S. Frank

6" x 8"
Oil on Museum Quality Board

Available at Art on the Levee Gallery
Newport, Ky
Years ago (too many to tell) I was lucky enough to live in southern Italy for four years. I have always loved buildings, especially doors and windows. To say the least, I was in heaven. The buildings and structures where so fantastically old. There was such a warm sensation to all of them. On my recent visit to Venice I took well over 700 pictures and when I started to look at them, I was not surprised to find how many of them were of old doors and windows. I think this fascination of mine with doors and windows is my trying to make connections between myself and the people I am visiting.

The door above had a great energy about it. I don't think it was the warm golden color of the building itself, but the warmth that was emitted through the two windows that drew me to it. I have tried to capture that warmth in this piece. I had so much fun working on this painting, I hope you enjoy it. I will be posting more of my pieces in the Italian Series as they are finished, so check back often.

Enjoy today!

"In The Blue Of The NIght" A colorful moonscape oil painting with S. Frank

5" x 10"

Ready To Hang

Congratulations to Laura Beasley, the winner of our second days,  Birthday Giveaway!

I love a full moon. They are so full of energy and make me feel great. Oh, how I wish I could just reach up into the sky and lasso that moon and pull it down.  Since we all know that isn't possible, I felt this might be the next best option. The blues of the sky play off so well against the brightness of the moon.
