Morning Routine

Sherry climbs up on my lap every morning and goes back to sleep.

Or at least that is what she tries to convince me she is doing.  I took the picture below from an odd angle and guess who was awake, but still snoring. You really should hear this dog. I'm surprised the windows don't rattle.

I love this morning routine as much as she does. It's so good for both of us.
Have a great Monday!

Sanctuary..a Series of Three

Sanctuary began late Thursday evening. It is to be a series of three paintings done in the same palette
expressing the feelings and emotions I experience when home. For me my home is my sanctuary. It is where I return each evening to the memories of my children, the glad and happy greeting from Sherry , my dog, the comfort of being surrounded by the momentos of a life lived....the sense of protection.

The three paintings above are the setups for the series. They use similar colors, and designs. I'll be working of the final pieces tomorrow and will h.ave them ready for this coming Artist Open House and Studio visit.

Abstract Setting Sun

As the day comes to an end the breezes blow out to sea, pulling the heat of the day with it. The "Setting Sun" cast shadows of brights reds and oranges across the greenish water. The end of another great day of Summer.

Layering It On!

Started out last night with a black undercoat. This morning I started working in the colors. When I work on my "Waterfalls", the colors are layered over each other, as a result the paints become REALLY thick. This new painting will need to setup and dry for a few days before I can get back to working on it.

Closeup of the layers showing a lot of the different colors of paint.

Have a great weekend and will see you on Monday.

How Did You Do That?

Today's painting is a quick study in two techniques. First three colors were blended to create an undercoat on the canvas. This setup for about half-n-hour and then the green and blue top coats were applied blending them to creat a smooth topcoat.

While the two colors were still very wet, two pottery tools were used to scrape off the desired topcoat paint allowing the undercoat to come through. The thickness of the tool determined how much was scraped away.

This is just one technique I use to creat the appearance of fine lines in very thick, wet paint.

Have a great weekend.

Daily Abstract Oil Painting

Today feels like an early Fall day; dark, overcast sky, rain and cooler temperatures. My daily paintings are influenced by my surroundings. The colors I use, the touch of the brush to the canvas all reflect the day. Thus, today's painting is full of the early reds and golden yellows of Fall.

Finding A Way

Like any other changes in our day to day existence the road is often times paved with highs and lows. The photo below is the end result of the second larger paining using the new paints. The brush strokes stayed true and the colors separate and clean. I am very happy with the end results.

On the other hand often times those first steps down a new path are are shaky and test our resolve to continue. The key is to simply to continue placing one step in front of another. The journey will have its challenges, but success and joy share those steps with you.

First attempt...a far cry from where it was originally headed.

I will be heading back over to the studio this afternoon so the journey can continue.

Changes Are A Good Thing!!!

I have been working on a few new changes in the studio this week. First, I have been using new paints for the week. Traditional Oil Paints  take a long time to dry and cause down time from one layer to the next. A fellow artist shared some Griffin Alkyd Oil Paints with me. They significantly speed up the drying time, which is great. The picture below is of a new painting which I started onTuesday.
First Day's Work

When I returned to the studio today I was able to work on the painting and make a number of changes.
Day Two

The quick drying allows multiple layers of paint to be placed over each other without mixing the paints into one big mess.

The second change is the use of a new rubber tool which is similar to some old wood tools used in throwing pottery. It is semi-soft and smooths the paint.

I hope you'll check back later this week and see how things are progressing.

Celebrating A Week of Birthday Wishes

Traditionally friends and family gather together to celebrate with an individual on their Birthday. Conversation, cake and gifts are shared to highlight the joy and happiness everyone wishes for the person who's birthday is being celebrated. I want to flip that around and say Thank You for being a part of my Life. It is the continued support of collectors, friends and family that allows me to pursue my passion and daily experience the Joy painting brings to me. Next week I will celebrate my Birthday and want to say Thank You by giving away each of my daily abstract paintings. I will be posting more information in the next few days, but for now Thank You for being a part of my Life.

Be sure to check my Facebook  Page  SANNA Art.
for details on how to enter each day. The first posting will be up by 6:00am tomorrow morning.

Thank You For allowing me to visit with you today.

Hard to Believe it Has Been Over a Month

Back in the middle of May I announced my next new challenge....a Daily Abstract Oil Painting. Since that time I have painted a small daily abstract Monday-Friday every week. The photo of my Gallery on Daily Paintworks below shows most of the recent pieces.

I have tried a number of times to do this challenge and quite frankly failed. It was always easy to get started for those first few days, then life kicked in and oh how easy it was to make excuses not to be able to paint that day. This time has been different and this past week while canning 50lbs. of peaches, working on a large painting in the studio and cleaning up for Final Friday I was determined to paint and not make excuses. I have spent a little time trying to figure out WHY. I believe that the underling reason is applicable to many of Life's situations.

The first major change has been the subject matter...I switched from still life's and landscapes to abstracts.  There was a reason for this switch and I will have to say it is working. I needed to loosen up my brush strokes  and to explore the relationship between companion colors. I was pretty sure that working each day on a new abstract and not wanting to spend forever on it would force me to take a loser, freer approach to my painting, and it has.
Secondly, there are thousands of books that have been written on Color Theory and they were always a good resource, but after years of teaching science using a Hands-on approach, I knew that personal trial and error would be the most beneficial
Thirdly, and probably most importantly...I'm having a blast doing these abstracts. Working on these abstracts has brought fun back into my job. I do approach my painting as my other words WORK. I spend on average 9-10 hours a day actively involved in painting, marketing, other words-Work. I wish someone had told me 30 plus years ago that what I did for Work could be fun...I believe I would of made changes.

Find something you love doing, something you enjoy and your definition of WORK will change.

Daily Abstracts...New Challenge

Artist are always try to improve their art. They work with each other, take workshops, sign up for classes all hoping to improve their own style while learning a few new insights. One of the things that all experienced artist tell you is to paint..keep painting, over and over. In recent years many artist have turned to completing a Daily Painting. Many work in still life's or plein air using a small canvas or panel. I have set a New Challenge and that is to complete a small 4"x4" painting five days a week(house needs to be cleaned and garden weeded)  These original paintings will be done in oil on a canvas panel, mounted in a frame. They will be posted on my Facebook page as well as in my Etsy Shop.the photo below is a composite of the five paintings from the first week.

"Tears" for a Loved One Lost

This has been a difficult week for me and as we head into Mothers Day I have struggled even more. When everything comes crashing down I paint to help release the pain. I know that as I go through the tears of pain in this moment that the soft, sweet light of life sits patiently waiting to rush back towards me. I know that this moment in my journey is necessary, not easy and that the pain will ease leaving behind the cherished memories.

Just A Peek

The photo above is just a small corner of a new piece that was finished this afternoon.  I loved working with the contrast of colors and the way they all worked together. You can see the piece at my shop on Etsy... SannaArt

TEXTURE...When Is It Too Much?

The three photos below were taken in the studio late yesterday. I have been working in acrylics a lot in the past few months, especially leaning towards abstract pieces. Yesterday I started my experiment working with adding a light film of plaster to the canvas before painting. The first two photos of the piece "Raspberry Parfait" was painted over a light film of plaster. As I worked through the piece I liked the subtle texture picking up small amounts of contrasting paint.

The last photo was painted over a heavier coating of plaster. When I first started to apply the paint it looked like I was going over tree bark. Kind of neat, but got lost in the additional layers of paint. My goal is to go back and try the heavy coating again, but focus on less paint. Will see how it all turns out. Today I'll be working in the new studio, starting to clean it and get ready for painting.

Have a great weekend.

With Each Breath

I woke up this morning and said Good-by to all of yesterday's worries...
The anxieties of, what is to be tomorrow, was told to go away...
Said a big Thank You and embraced what will be TODAY

Each day brings new Joys, Sorrows and Questions.
With each breath, tear and Smile  I know I am ALIVE
